Hi, I'm Alec Rothman

I love working with data and analytics, turning complex problems into elegant solutions through dashboards, pipelines, and fun experimental projects. Whether it's building enterprise data tools or quirky side projects, I'm always excited to create something impactful.

About me

I'm an Analytics & Product leader with 15+ years of experience transforming complex data ecosystems into strategic business assets. From leading Salesforce's Marketing Data Warehouse product to developing an AI-powered menu analyzer and launching a successful NFT project, I combine technical expertise with creative problem-solving to deliver measurable business outcomes.

My journey has taken me from being the first analytics hire at Greenpeace to directing product and analytics teams at Salesforce. I excel at communicating technical concepts across all levels of an organization, aligning cross-functional teams, and bridging the gap between complex data systems and business needs. One of my core strengths is architecting enterprise-scale analytics platforms - from custom collectors and data pipelines to monitoring systems that handle millions of monthly visitors. I believe in building solutions that go beyond off-the-shelf offerings to address unique organizational challenges.

When I'm not deep in product development or data architecture, you'll find me exploring emerging technologies, particularly AI and LLMs. My recent projects, like Blunt Therapist and Menu Scanz, showcase my commitment to creating practical applications that solve real problems. I'm driven by the potential of combining solid data architecture with innovative technologies to create solutions that drive data-informed decision making with measurable impact.

My professional experience

Salesforce

2018 - Present

Director of Product & Data Enablement

2023 - Present

Currently leading teams building Salesforce's Marketing Data Warehouse product, delivering dozens of foundational Snowflake datasets using dbt, Airflow, and semantic layers. We even created an Analytics AI Agent pilot that accelerated marketing program execution by 50%+! The goal? Create rock-solid datasets spanning Web, Campaigns, Paid Media, Events, Pipeline, Budget, and Product Usage that marketing folks actually want to use.

I spend my days juggling product vision with practical execution, making sure we're not just building datasets, but building the right datasets with 100% uptime availability and trustworthiness. It's a lot of collaboration with other leaders across Salesforce, trying to push the envelope on how we use data and algorithms internally. Also contributed to Marketing's migration of 100% of source data from legacy systems to Snowflake, reducing operational costs while increasing accessibility and reliability of key data for decision making.

Director of Analytics

2022 - 2023

Developed dimension and metric feature stores used by data scientists to show that 77% of the $10B Annual Order Value growth stems from retained accounts with Trailblazers. My team also unified 20M+ Trailblazer profiles across learning, community, and technical audience platforms - metrics that are shared regularly on public company earnings calls. Built and maintained all sorts of data goodies: pipelines in Airflow, SQL transformations, and Tableau dashboards that helped us understand how people were actually using our platform.

Director of Marketing Technology

2020 - 2022

Built and implemented a custom application leveraging AWS Redshift and Kinesis that delivered fully cross-domain web analytics across 12 Salesforce websites (4.5M+ monthly visitors), showing 10-15% overlap for all traffic and 30%+ overlap for traffic from US-based companies. Took our successful first-party data products and spread them across the company, helping connect the dots in our complex digital landscape. Got my hands dirty designing a cross-domain experience that achieved a 151% increase in user signups for an India-focused developer program. Also helped expand our ETL / ELT pipeline game to synthesize customer lifecycle data from disparate sources.

Marketing Technology Manager

2018 - 2020

Started my Salesforce journey at Heroku, where I owned the marketing tech strategy for 700K+ monthly users. Developed data science feature sets and produced a predictive algorithm for Security to identify potential abuse at sign-up, which outperformed third-party services by 89% for high-risk segments. Built Looker dashboards to visualize user acquisition performance across 100K+ monthly sign-ups. Contributed to ELT infrastructure by developing LookML semantic data models to generate actionable business insights.

Autodesk

2014 - 2018

Principal Analytics Engineer

2016 - 2018

Architected and implemented a scalable, GDPR-compliant enterprise web analytics platform serving 20M+ monthly visitors across global websites and applications, generating 90M+ monthly page views. My pet project was a custom browser extension leveraged by hundreds of monthly active users that increased organizational velocity of enterprise analytics implementations. Here's the cool part: I architected the GDPR consent logic using Tealium that worked seamlessly across all of Autodesk's top-level domains, making sure user privacy preferences were respected globally.

Beyond that, I got to play in the Account Based Marketing space, setting up real-time use of first-party, account-based data for personalization. The whole time, my focus was on building scalable, compliant solutions that could handle enterprise-level traffic while respecting user privacy.

Senior Technical Web Analyst

2014 - 2016

Led the charge on foundational web analytics platform upgrades, making it more scalable and future-proof. Executed new designs to deliver products of maximum value through a multi-stage, pre-development process. Also played tech matchmaker, integrating services like Google Analytics and Adobe Analytics as well as data enrichment services, optimization tools, and voice-of-customer platforms into our analytics ecosystem.

CREDO Mobile

2011 - 2013

Web / Marketing Data Analyst

Implemented a remarketing display ad campaign with A/B testing that improved customer conversion rates by 15% compared to control cohorts. Built a regression model for predicting customer churn that outperformed the existing model by 10% in a 30-day contest. Also expanded the customer matching framework by 10% using advanced SQL and Levenshtein distance methodologies to make sure we weren't accidentally showing acquisition offers to existing customers.

Greenpeace USA

2008 - 2011

Data Analyst

Pioneered the organization's first dedicated data analysis role, managing insights from three primary databases containing ~1.5M supporter records across fundraising, advocacy, email communications, and grassroots initiatives. Developed KPI reporting for a nationwide canvassing program that generated 1M+ face-to-face contacts and recruited 75K+ monthly donors annually. This is where my journey in data analytics began, working for a cause I believed in while learning the ropes of turning numbers into insights.

Some personal projects

Blunt Therapist

AI LLM Node.js Claude

An AI grounded on real therapeutic principles but delivers advice with refreshing directness. It's like having a brutally honest friend who also happens to be a trained professional. Blunt Therapist provides direct, no-nonsense psychological guidance.

  • Built with Anthropic's Claude for authentic therapeutic interactions
  • Implemented utterance analysis system to ensure both privacy and therapeutic efficacy
  • Leveled up AI/LLM development skills through complex prompt engineering and safety systems

Menu Scanz

AI LLM Node.js Google Vision

This was an exploration of AI, and also trying to solve a personal problem: dietary restrictions and restaurants. I wanted the ability to take a picture of a menu and understand if any of the ingredients would be problematic, and I wanted LLMs to do it for me.

  • Used Claude 3.5 Sonnet to write 99% of the code
  • Focused on practical application and user experience
  • Hands-on experience with prompt engineering and AI development

Cheeky Stuff

NFT Ethereum Node.js Analytics GIF

A "cheeky" NFT project combining technical innovation with humor. I developed a custom PNG-to-GIF composition system that could generate seamless animations from hand-drawn frames and combine traits with configurable rarity settings. This powered the creation of 10K unique NFTs, each with their own personality and characteristics.

  • Built custom GIF composition engine that could seamlessly combine 6-8+ hand-drawn PNG frames with configurable rarity tiers
  • Developed Ethereum smart contract and Node.js web app with comprehensive analytics tracking (14.4K+ events captured)
  • Handled viral traffic spikes with 3.4K users and 11.5K sessions over launch period
  • Successfully tracked full minting funnel: 5.2K wallet connects led to 2K+ completed mints
  • Scaled to support 1.2K+ unique wallets minting all 10K NFTs
