Hi, I'm Alec Rothman
I love working with data and analytics, turning complex problems into elegant solutions through dashboards, pipelines, and fun experimental projects. Whether it's building enterprise data tools or quirky side projects, I'm always excited to create something impactful.
About me
I'm an Analytics & Product leader passionate about transforming data challenges into innovative solutions. From leading the Marketing Data Warehouse product at Salesforce to developing an AI-powered menu analyzer and launching a successful NFT project, I combine technical expertise with creative problem-solving to build tools and systems that drive impact.
Over the years, I've grown from being the first analytics hire at Greenpeace to directing product and analytics teams at Salesforce. I excel at bridging the gap between complex technical concepts and business needs, making data accessible and actionable for everyone from engineers to executives. One of my core strengths is architecting first-party analytics systems - from custom collectors and data pipelines to monitoring tools that can handle enterprise-scale demands. I believe in building solutions that go beyond off-the-shelf offerings to address unique organizational challenges.
When I'm not deep in product development or data architecture, you'll find me exploring emerging technologies, particularly AI and LLMs. My recent projects, like Blunt Therapist and Menu Scanz, showcase my commitment to creating practical applications that solve real problems. I'm driven by the potential of combining solid data architecture with innovative technologies to create solutions that are both powerful and intuitive, always with an eye toward driving data-informed decision making.
Technical Toolkit
My professional experience
Salesforce
2018 - PresentDirector of Product & Data Enablement
2023 - PresentCurrently leading a team of technical Product Managers, Data Scientists, and Data Engineers building Salesforce's Marketing Data Warehouse product. We're working with all the cool stuff - Snowflake, dbt, semantic layers, and even throwing some LLMs into the mix. The goal? Create rock-solid datasets that marketing folks actually want to use, whether they're analysts crunching numbers, engineers building tools, or data scientists training models.
I spend my days juggling product vision with practical execution, making sure we're not just building datasets, but building the right datasets. It's a lot of collaboration with other leaders across Salesforce, trying to push the envelope on how we use data and algorithms internally. Also get my hands dirty with Tableau, building dashboards that help us keep an eye on our data pipelines and quality testing - because nobody likes unreliable data!
Director of Analytics
2022 - 2023Ran point on data insights for Salesforce's technical audience - the developers, builders, and Trailblazers that make the ecosystem tick. Built and maintained all sorts of data goodies: pipelines in Airflow, SQL transformations, and Tableau dashboards that helped us understand how people were actually using our platform. My proudest achievement? Connecting the dots between technical documentation, learning tools, and actual revenue through some serious number-crunching with our data science team.
Director of Marketing Technology
2020 - 2022Orchestrated the marketing tech strategy across Salesforce's ecosystem. Took our successful first-party data products and spread them across the company, helping connect the dots in our complex digital landscape. Got my hands dirty building custom tools to tackle marketing analytics challenges and fill gaps in our tech stack. Also helped expand our ETL / ELT pipeline game to squeeze value out of every dataset we could find.
Marketing Technology Manager
2018 - 2020Started my Salesforce journey at Heroku, where I owned the marketing tech strategy. Built out Looker dashboards that actually made sense to people in Marketing, Product, and Security. Created predictive models to figure out which users were most likely to hit key milestones, which fed into our automation systems. Contributed to ELT infrastructure (LookML) to generate actionable business data and insights.
Autodesk
2014 - 2018Principal Analytics Engineer
2016 - 2018Built and maintained the analytics backbone for Autodesk's massive web presence - we're talking millions of monthly visitors across a global network of sites. My pet project was a custom browser extension that made everyone's lives easier when dealing with web analytics implementations. Here's the cool part: I architected the GDPR consent logic using Tealium that worked seamlessly across all of Autodesk's top-level domains, making sure user privacy preferences were respected globally. That implementation? It's still running on their websites today (last I checked), which is pretty wild to think about.
Beyond that, I got to play in the Account Based Marketing space, setting up real-time data systems for personalization. The whole time, my focus was on building scalable, compliant solutions that could handle enterprise-level traffic while respecting user privacy.
Senior Technical Web Analyst
2014 - 2016Led the charge on modernizing our web analytics platform, making it more scalable and future-proof. Spent a lot of time in the pre-development trenches, prototyping and validating new designs to make sure we were building the right thing. Also played tech matchmaker, integrating all sorts of new services like Google Analytics and Adobe Analytics into our analytics ecosystem.
CREDO Mobile
2011 - 2013Web / Marketing Data Analyst
Dove into the world of telecom analytics, implementing Google Analytics and Adobe Analytics tools and expanding our marketing data capabilities. Built a regression model for predicting customer risk that beat the existing model by 10% in a 30-day showdown. Also got creative with customer matching to make sure we weren't accidentally showing acquisition offers to existing customers.
Greenpeace USA
2008 - 2011Data Analyst
Cut my teeth as the original "data guy" at Greenpeace USA. This is where my journey in data analytics began, working for a cause I believed in while learning the ropes of turning numbers into insights.
Some personal projects
Blunt Therapist
An AI grounded on real therapeutic principles but delivers advice with refreshing directness. It's like having a brutally honest friend who also happens to be a trained professional. Blunt Therapist provides direct, no-nonsense psychological guidance.
- Built with Anthropic's Claude for authentic therapeutic interactions
- Implemented utterance analysis system to ensure both privacy and therapeutic efficacy
- Leveled up AI/LLM development skills through complex prompt engineering and safety systems
Menu Scanz
This was an exploration of AI, and also trying to solve a personal problem: dietary restrictions and restaurants. I wanted the ability to take a picture of a menu and understand if any of the ingredients would be problematic, and I wanted LLMs to do it for me.
- Used Claude 3.5 Sonnet to write 99% of the code
- Focused on practical application and user experience
- Hands-on experience with prompt engineering and AI development
Stuff up Butts
A cheeky NFT project combining technical innovation with humor. I developed a custom PNG-to-GIF composition system that could generate seamless animations from hand-drawn frames and combine traits with configurable rarity settings. This powered the creation of 10K unique NFTs, each with their own personality and characteristics.
- Built custom GIF composition engine that could seamlessly combine 6-8+ hand-drawn PNG frames with configurable rarity tiers
- Developed Ethereum smart contract and Node.js web app with comprehensive analytics tracking (14.4K+ events captured)
- Handled viral traffic spikes with 3.4K users and 11.5K sessions over launch period
- Successfully tracked full minting funnel: 5.2K wallet connects led to 2K+ completed mints
- Scaled to support 1.2K+ unique wallets minting all 10K NFTs
